Makakatana Bay Lodge offers visitors luxury accommodation in KwaZulu-Natal with private personal service with a homely touch. This lodge is the only privately owned game lodge offering luxury South African safaris within the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park World Heritage Site in KwaZulu Natal.
Makakatana Bay Lodge derives its name from the 70 year old 'Crab House' on which the lodge lies. The 'Crab House' was once a storage place for crabs caught in the lake but has since been converted into the Makakatana Wine Cellar with a giant tree growing out its roof.
Makakatana Bay Lodge's premier location within the Wetland Park makes it ideal for activities such as fishing, boating, scuba diving, horse riding and so much more.
The lodge is set in a dune forest that bursts out over a wetland onto the banks of the lake. Hippos and other wildlife often wander through the lodge, underneath the walkways. The outdoor dining deck and your room’s private viewing deck allow you to watch these wild animals uninterrupted in their full glory.
A bench has also been subtly placed close to the waters edge to allow one to quietly sit and bird watch. Often in season, the bay in front of the lodge has hundreds of pelican and other birds feeding.
